TALK: Swivel: Hardening WebAssembly against Spectre
Swivel is a new compiler framework for hardening WebAssembly (Wasm) against Spectre attacks. Wasm has become popular even outside the browser as a lightweight, in-process sandbox, used for example to isolate different clients on edge cloud platforms. Unfortunately, Spectre attacks can bypass Wasm’s isolation guarantees. Swivel
hardens Wasm against these attacks, ensuring that potentially malicious code can neither break out of the Wasm sandbox nor coerce victim code to leak secret data. Swivel is joint work with 10 other authors led by Shravan Narayan.
Craig Disselkoen is a sixth-year PhD student at UC San Diego under Deian Stefan and Dean Tullsen. His research focuses on fighting memory safety vulnerabilities using techniques such as symbolic execution, secure sandboxing, and language- and compiler-based program transformations. Craig’s work has won two Distinguished Paper
Awards (USENIX Security 2020 and POPL 2021), and his work on software Spectre defenses at PLDI 2020 was a finalist for the inaugural Intel Hardware Security Academic Award.
