Reminder Subject: TALK: Reinventing Email and Attention Management

Email usage has been steadily growing and evolving, until today, when it has become the everyday work environment for large classes of people who manage their lives through their email. The reinventing email project builds on user studies that revealed new problems facing individuals who work this way.  The talk will review user research, design explorations and implementation challenges of the ongoing effort.   Many of the techniques developed for helping manage attention for email carry over to other settings.  We will look at some of these generalizations as well as design issues having to do with interruptions and support for context switching as people rapidly turn their attention from one task to another.

Irene Greif is an IBM Fellow and Department Group Manager of The Collaborative User Experience Group (CUE).   Irene joined Lotus in 1987 where she formed the Lotus Research Group that developed Version Manager for 1-2-3, the internet web publisher (later rebranded as Domino, the server for the Lotus Notes product), and early prototypes for Lotus' instant messaging and mobile products. Now formally a part of  IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, and renamed CUE, the group still focuses on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) research and continues to work closely with IBM's Software Group and Lotus product developers. Irene received her SB in Math, and SM and PhD in Computer Science, all from MIT.  She was on the faculty of University Washington and MIT, and was a research scientist in the Laboratory for Computer Science before she joined Lotus.
